The Art of Active Listening 22September2018

Written by Bryan Low, Sixer & Scribe

Today, we came to school at the normal 9.00 and put our bags own before beginning our horseshoe and colour party.

After that, we sat down in indian file and waited for further instructions. Baloo came to the front, and told us that we were going to learn how to perform active listening.

He taught us a little on what to do, and then told us and acronym for it; EAR
E - Eye contact; have eye contact with the speaker
A - Ask; when we do not understand something the speaker is saying, we should ask him to confirm.
R - Reflect; make sure that you know what he is saying and repeat it in your head so that you will not easily forget too.

After learning, it was time to see if we had listened to Baloo’s lesson! He asked for volunteers to come in pairs and act out active listening. A pair did not do very well, while another pair was very funny, so we laughed a lot.

After that, we prepared to move to the music room. Why? Well, some senior citizens from AWWA might be coming to our school, so we had to entertain them. The scout leaders decided that we would do ‘It’s time for Africa” by Shakira. We walked to the music room in our Sixes led by the Sixers and lined up according to height in the music room.

We practiced and practiced, trying to get everything right. Once, we had to hold our hands straight up for about 3 minutes. Many groans were heard, but it was for us to perfect our style. It was a very tiring but fun process.

Once we were done, we went back to the Kidzone, did sunset party, and were dismissed. It was a very fun day and we looked forward to the actual day when we would have to perform to the elderly citizens.
