Written by: Gautham, Sixer 2015-2016 & Guest Scribe The Akela award ceremony was held at Yangzheng on the 22 nd of November 2016. It was a special occasion for recipients of the Akela award for their achievement. I was one of the fortunate few from HPPS to receive this prestigious award. Indeed it was a memorable event for me. Prior to the commencement of the event, all the recipients were ushered to the hall. We were briefed on how to carry ourselves when we go on stage to receive the award. After the briefing, the organisers held a rehearsal for the recipients on how to go on stage and pose for photographs. It was indeed a new experience for us and I was very excited about it. Soon after the rehearsal, the recipients returned to their respective seats. Then, all the guests gathered in the hall. When all the guests had settled down, the emcees addressed them and announced that the guest of honour would be arriving soon. Shortly after, the gue...

Written by: Jasper Koh, Sixer & Scribe “Beep! Beep! Beep!” the Senior Sixer blew the whistle signalling the start of the meeting. We started of the day with some badges that the adult leaders had to give out. After Mr Tan came in and gave us an introduction on what we were going to do – The use of Compass. We were then told to find our pacing, we had to walk 100 meters and find out how many steps we took. After that, we went up to the PAL room where he taught us more about compass. First, we started of with a recap on the map symbols. He drew the symbols on the whiteboard and we had to name the symbols on the piece of paper. After that, he also tested us on the points of the compass and we had to find out the grid number of a dot on the map he drew. Soon, he explained to us on how to use a compass and handed us one. The compass he handed out to us was said to be the most common compass, the sliver compass. We tried using the sliver compass and we had to find the...

“Horseshoe!” the senior sixers shouted. We gathered into the horseshoe formation and did colour party. After colour party, we sat down in the Indian file formation, while Mdm Kerina gave out progress and arrow badges. When all the badges were given out, we gathered in a circle with our six to mark out who had not got their silver or bronze arrow, and how many tasks they had to complete if they had not. Next, we learnt how to do square lashing. After everybody had got the hang of it, we had a competition. For the competition, we had to use square lashing to tie four short, wooden poles together. To win the competition, our square lashing had to be strong and stable, and would not come undone when it was pushed or pulled by force. We were given thirty minutes to tying our poles together. Time really flew as we rushed to meet the deadline and to make sure our knot and methods of tying it was right. All too soon, we had to stop what we were doing, commence sunset party, ho...

Written By: Jasper Koh, Sixer & Scribe “Beep! Beep! Beep!” the Senior Sixer blew the whistle. This week, the meeting was not held at the usual kidzone, instead it was held at the PAL room. This week we were going to learn “What is a topographic map? and “How to read a topographic map.” Mr Tan was the one who was conducting the lesson. He explained everything about the topographic map like what does the lines represents. We also saw a topographic map of Singapore! After that, we went down to the canteen to draw a map using symbols to represent the stall/tables. We were given about 15 minutes to draw out the map. After drawing the map, we gathered at the kidzone and handed in all our drawing to Raksha. We then lined up in horseshoe formation for flag lowering. This was not the end of the meeting yet. We went back up to the PAL room and now we were being briefed on the upcoming events such as the Tobacco Free Generation 2000 (TFG2000) as we were going to the event to prom...

Written by: Joanne Koong, Assistant Sixer & Scribe The foyer was filled with chatter. Today we were going to the Queenstown police and the fire station. Some of the P5 and P6 went for the Akela award interview. “ Okay. Now, we are going to check if everyone has brought their consent forms,” Raksha announced. Everyone instinctively stood up and our names were called out. Soon, we found ourselves at the station. My group went to the police station followed by the fire station. We were then briefed about what a policeman has to wear. The five main equipment are 10 bullets, a rifle, a taser, a T-baton and a pair of handcuffs. We went to the armoury and learnt that only one person is allowed in the armoury at one time. We were then briefed about what would happen if we bullied other people or stole. If we bullied someone, there is a chance that we may go to jail! Last but not least, they explained the insides of a police car. Not long after we went to the fire station. A...

Written by: Trisha Chan, Sixer & Scribe “Horseshoe!” The senior sixers hollered. After we assembled in Horseshoe formation, we did color party and observed one minute of silence. Then we found ourselves sitting on the floor in Indian file, looking up at Raksha. Last week, Raksha told us to bring our mess tins for next week’s activity, which was outdoor cooking! Now she asked us to move our bags to Kidzone 2, and take out our mess tins. At Kidzone 2, each six was assigned a spot to cook, and we also found out that we were going to cook a burger! Next, the sixers went forward to collect solid fuel and portable stoves. Every scout got three pieces of solid fuel and a portable stove to cook with. First, we put a piece of solid fuel on the portable stove. Then, we lit a match, and we put it on the solid fuel to burn it. When that was done, we put our mess tins on the cooker, and cracked an egg in our mess tins. Some scouts preferred scrambled eg...

Written by: Jasper Koh, Sixer & Scribe “Beep! Beep! Beep! Horse Shoe!” the senior sixers shouted. We started off our meeting as usual but today the activity was not taking place at the usual Kidzone. Instead, it was conducted at the PAL room. Why? Today was a special scout meeting, we were going to learn about aviation. It was for us to get a Young Aviator Badge, this activity was conducted by the Scout HQ (Headquarters). It aims at enhancing the awareness in Aviation-related domains, and introducing us to the History of Flight. We learnt about the Principals of Flight through things like building our own paper airplanes. After folding the paper airplanes, we decorated it. We folded and decorated 3 paper planes in total. Soon, the exciting part came. It was competition time! It was to see whose paper plane could fly the furthest. After that, we had lunch at school as we were going out. Soon after lunch, we left the school for our outing to the Changi Airport...

Written by: Joanne Koong, Asstant Sixer & Scribe “I am so excited! I cannot wait for the bumboat ride!” All the scouts were bubbling with excitement about the trip to Pulau Ubin. For the first time in history (I think), our scouts were extremely attentive and we only had to do the headcount once! Well done! After much anticipation, we finally reached the jetty at Changi Village where we could board the bumboats. We were making such a ruckus that Kaa glared at us and all of us immediately kept quiet. As most of the boys wanted to go to the toilet, the girls boarded the first bumboat to Pulau Ubin! The ride to the Pulau Ubin was very scenic and we were even fortunate enough to see a bumboat pulling a barge containing heaps, no…. mountains of sand! Every time one of us spotted something interesting, everyone else would go ‘oo’ and ‘ah’. Within minutes, we reached Pulau Ubin. We waited at the jetty for the others. Kaa briefed us on why the adult leaders w...

Written by: Kylie Teo, Assistant Senior Sixer & Scribe “HORSESHOE!!” shouted the newly appointed Senior Sixers, Shafiq and I, signaling the start of the scout meeting. It was a Saturday morning as we started our scout meeting as usual. The scouts scrambled to get into Horseshoe to start Kalapati. After the usual ceremony, we assembled into Indian file. Mdm Kerina then explained why we had to bring a needle and thread, we were learning how to … sew! I was very excited as sewing is my favourite pass time. But before we could sew, we had to learn how to tie our shoelaces even though many of us were already able to tie our shoelaces. The instructions for the Sixers were to teach their younger cubs how to tie a shoelace. After about 15 minutes of tying shoelaces, we had a little competition. The Sixers had taken off their shoes and put it about 5 metres away. The goal was to get the whole six to tie and untie the Sixers shoe. After that little compet...
