Sixer Refresher Course on 10 January 2026

Term 1 Week 1

By Possum Assistant Sixer Ming Heng

On 10 January 2026, I went to Scouts feeling refreshed but unsure of what to expect, as no one had informed me about the details of the day’s event. When the meeting started, we did not have our usual colour party like in normal meetings. Instead, only sixers and assistant sixers were present, rather than the full six members who usually attend.

During this Sixer Refresher Course, we revised our foot drill knowledge and flag-raising procedures. In the first activity, which focused on whistle commands, we had to memorise the different whistle signals for “horseshoe formation”, “Indian file”, “assistant sixers and sixers gather”, “sixers gather”, and “assistant sixers gather”. We were then tested by the senior sixers. They blew the whistle commands according to Ikki’s instructions, and we had to raise our left or right hand or leg to show that we understood the commands.

After that, we moved on to the practical component. We had to carry out the commands blown by the senior sixers using the metal whistle. Although it was sometimes confusing because the senior sixers were slightly out of sync, we were still able to distinguish the different whistle blows and form the correct formations.

Next, we practised flag-raising. We had to march to the flag one by one according to Ikki’s instructions and raise the flag. It was challenging to avoid moving the same hand and leg together while marching, as we were used to walking normally.

Once we became more confident, we practised lowering the flag. This was easier as we did not need to march; we only had to tie the flag properly around the flagpole. After that, we signed off our arrows while Ikki taught us new campfire songs that we could use for the upcoming unit campfire. During this time, Hathi was also signing off our arrows and badges.

When we finished tying the flag, Ikki went to assist some alumni while we waited. After he returned, we were tasked with keeping the flagpole. Finally, we were dismissed after the sixers were given their scout logs for decoration.
