Handover Ceremony, 15th July 2017

Written by Joanne Koong, Sixer & Scribe leader

Today’s horseshoe held special significance for Shafiq and Kylie, our dear senior sixers. This was their last meeting as the P6 scouts would be stepping down to prepare for PSLE. After the horseshoe, Mdm Kerina gave out progress and proficiency badges. The cub with the biggest haul was YiHan with 9 badges!

Next was the announcement of the new leaders of the Pack…. Everyone was reeling in excitement, wondering who our new senior sixers would be. Those of us who attended the Sixers’ Training Camp in June were anxious to know if we would get an appointment or a promotion. Firstly, the assistant sixers were called out to receive their new appointment, certificate and badge from Mr Tan Cheng Kiong, our Chief Commissioner. Next were the sixers. I was promoted to a sixer! I was over the moon! Sadly, there were three sixes without a sixer. All the assistant sixers were informed that some of them might be promoted to a sixer over the next 3 months, if they perform well. Last but not least were the senior sixers … … Drum roll, please!  Drrrrrrrr….. Trisha and Hafiz! Trisha was our new senior sixer and Hafiz was the assistant senior sixer. The whole pack broke into thunderous cheer, especially the girls. Mr Cheong quickly briefed the Pack on the Handover Ceremony procedure. He also reminded all assistant sixers to attain the Bronze Arrow by the end of the year while sixers had to achieve the Silver Arrow.

Soon, several parents streamed into the Kidzone, all eager to see their children in their new roles. The new sixers stood in a row at one end of the Kidzone while the rest of the pack stood at the other end of the Kidzone. Finally, the Handover Ceremony commenced. The outgoing senior sixer and assistant senior sixer, Shafiq and Kylie, handed the Scout flag, Unit flag and attendance files to the new senior sixer, Trisha, and assistant senior sixer, Hafiz. Then, each six, led by the outgoing sixer, walked across the Kidzone, towards the new sixer. The outgoing sixer handed the six flag, six log and the cubs to the new sixer, and blessed him or her with some pearls of wisdom and words of encouragement. I am the proud sixer of Wallaby! Trisha, my sixer for the past year, wished me all the best! All of us, the new leaders beamed with pride and joy while cameras were clicking away! The ceremony ended with the traditional Fireman’s chair for the P6s who were carried across the Kidzone. We had so much fun!

The second half of the scout meeting consisted of songs, led by Mr Tan, and games, led by Mr Lin. The Pack went crazy playing the Virus and Chicken Evolution. We laughed so hard that many of us had stitches in our sides.

The closing horseshoe was led by Trisha and sunset party was led by Bilby. It was an awesomely memorable day for many of us. We had a whale of a time. Congratulations to all the new leaders of Pelican Cub Scout Unit!
