Henry Park Pelican (Cub) Scout

Written by Kei Rui Min, Senior Sixer & Scribe This Saturday, the new recruits, along with the P6s, gathered at the Kidszone 1 to have our first camp of the year! Even thought it was only a day camp, I was still looking forward to it. After being grouped into their sixes, we took turns introducing ourselves. Then, we had a short ice breaker game to see if we could remember each other’s names. We were split into two teams and the recruits would come up one by one and see if they were able to recognize each other.  After that, Baloo began to explain the Jungle Book story and the recruits took turns to be the different characters in the book. Afterwards, we had a foot drill session with Bagheera where we learnt basic drills like ‘sedia’ and ‘senang diri’. Soon, everyone got the hang of it and we were given a quick snack break. It was the first scout meeting after only being able to see each other on our computer screens. Some people looked brain dead and gloomy and everyone else was excited to see their friends. I only have one scout achievement this year and it is to get my Akela award. There were new recruits joining us this year but the number of people joining decreased due to COVID-19. We started the flag pole raising ceremony and our first activity began. Everyone sat in Indian file as the sixers and assistant sixers practiced folding flags for the flag pole. It was actually much easier to do than I thought. After that, we had six’s corner, where each six gathers in their own corner to discuss about things like badges. Written by Kei Rui Min, Senior Sixer & Scribe This Saturday, we were doing the Crime Prevention Badge. I was very excited as I had never attended a talk from a police officer before. This week’s meeting was a little different, instead of splitting up into 2 groups we were going to have only one meeting. However, the meeting would be 2 hours long. We started of the meeting as usual and we were soon joined by a police officer. We also learnt that he worked at the Queenstown Police Station. At the start of the talk, he addressed us about common crimes that children our age commit. We also went through some of the emergency numbers that we can call in case of an emergency. I learnt a lot of things such as that we should only call 999 in case of an emergency that requires immediate attention. Written by Garren Pang, Acting Sixer & Scribe I felt excited about today’s Zoom scouts meeting session- we would be designing and making our own lanterns!  When I joined the meeting, we had our Colour Party as usual. After that, we continued with our song journey. This time we learnt a song from New Zealand. It was a traditional love song named Pokarekare ana. I liked the soothing rhythm of the song and its unique culture. We also learnt that this song was in Maori. After we were briefed by Mdm. Kerina on how to make the lanterns, we were split into breakout rooms. We were given 45 minutes to make the lantern. The special part of today’s activity was that we would be using recycled materials to make the lantern. The first step was to cut four rectangles on the sides of the tissue box. Next, we used the cellophane paper that Mdm. Kerina gave us in school to cover the cut-out areas. Finally, we could unleash our creativity to decorate our lanterns with whatever we had at home. Written by Foo Zhen Xi, Sixer & Scribe I had just logged into the scouts zoom call ready in my uniform. Raksha warmly greeted everyone then it was time for horseshoe flag raising. After that, Rui Min the senior sixer, conducted 1 minute of silence then we started the day. Kaar broke us up into our breakout rooms to make of robot out of recycled materials with a theme. My six decided to do a compartment robot with a lot of compartments to hold things and our theme was the earth, along the lines of recycling. I made my robot by cutting open a box then put two cups on top and two on the sides. I then cut out some blue recycled paper into circles then drew green spots on them and stuck it to my robot. I checked with my six to see if they were doing okay and luckily they were all doing fine.  After that we got called back into the main meeting room to present our robots. Written by Caitlyn Lam, Asst Sixer & Scribe  That Saturday, Dragonheart taught us about the topic Map and Compass. He showed us 16 directions, North, South, East, West, North-east, South-east, South-west, North-west and more.  Then he showed us maps and taught us bearing. He said to find a landmark, look at the map and spin the map, until the landmark that is infront of you is also at the top of the map.  After that he taught us how to read and write MGR. I specifically liked that activity because it challenged me to see very small dots. It was so fun that I did it again and again and again.

I was very excited because today, we were going to have the first ever virtual handover ceremony! Soon, it was time to start. However, not everyone was here as some of them had not read the email that Raksha had sent out. So, we stared without them. As usual, we had our colour party. This time, we had to watch a video and follow accordingly. Then, we continued on our song journey with a song from Korea called Arirang. After watching the music video, we were told learn how to sing it. After that, it was finally time to start the handover ceremony. We watched another video. This time, it was about the new appointment holders. After that, it was to have six corner. We were told to give some advice to the new appointment holders.
