Lantern Making 26thSep2020

Written by Garren Pang, Acting Sixer & Scribe

I felt excited about today’s Zoom scouts meeting session- we would be designing and making our own lanterns!

When I joined the meeting, we had our Colour Party as usual. After that, we continued with our song journey. This time we learnt a song from New Zealand. It was a traditional love song named Pokarekare ana. I liked the soothing rhythm of the song and its unique culture. We also learnt that this song was in Maori.

After we were briefed by Mdm. Kerina on how to make the lanterns, we were split into breakout rooms. We were given 45 minutes to make the lantern. The special part of today’s activity was that we would be using recycled materials to make the lantern. The first step was to cut four rectangles on the sides of the tissue box. Next, we used the cellophane paper that Mdm. Kerina gave us in school to cover the cut-out areas. Finally, we could unleash our creativity to decorate our lanterns with whatever we had at home. For example, we could use strings, stickers and coloured paper. However, we could obtain extra points if we decorate our lanterns with things related to scouting.

I could see that my six was having fun making the lanterns. My six also asked me many questions on how to improve their lantern and they were all very sophisticated. Due to our limited time, we had to complete our lanterns at home.

Lastly, we discussed about which song we would sing for the next week song competition before returning to the main room. We chose the Japanese song, Kitaguni No Haru. The other six also chose their own song. We were instructed to practice our respective songs and compete next week.
Sadly, this was the end of the lesson. Happy Mid-Autumn festival everyone!
