First Aid Activity & Progress Badges, 30th September 2017

Image
Written  by: Cheong Yew Chung, Assistant Sixer & Scribe “Beep, beep” the Senior Sixers blew their whistles. We went to horseshoe formation and did colour party. After colour party we played a game called “helium straw”.  From the facial expression and laughter of everyone, we could see that everyone had a great time. It was also fun watching how each other try their ways and means to balance the straws.                                                                            After the game of straw, we did some First Aid. Mr Cheong taught us how to use the scarf as a triangular bandage. We learnt to tie the head, arm and knee bandage. In the process, we had lots of fun. We ended the lesson with a First Aid Activity Game. Every Six needs to volunteer a victim and ties on him the bandages we have learnt earlier. For some Six, the “injured person” looks like a Mummy with all the bandages on him. Everyone learned new skills. The entire troop had fun doing the First Aid

VIA @ HPPS Mid-Autumn Festival, 29th September 2017

Image
The Pelican Scouts were approached this year to provide help to the Mid-Autumn Festival held in Henry Park on 29 September 2017. A total of 15 cub scouts (P4 & P5) stepped up and agreed to serve the school. Their duties include ushering guests, manning various games booths and helping out at the stage area.  The teachers and guests were impressed with our scouts. They showed responsibility and resilience. They hardly took any breaks and some forgo their ice-cream and popcorn coupons. In fact, they also acted as our school’s ambassadors, giving directions and offering help whenever possible to the participants and guests, beyond their call of duty, truly adhering to the Scout’s Law. We are proud of them.

Castles Building, 23rd September 2017

Written by: Syed Hafiz, Assistant Senior Sixer & Scribe “Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep” I blew my whistle to attract all the cubs for horseshoe. After horseshoe we gathered in Indian file and straightened our lines. Then, we sat down and gave our attention to Mdm. Karina. She was giving out badges. She told us what we were going to do.  When I heard what we were going to do, I was super excited. We were going to build castles for king or queen. I joined platypus to help them out. We were given straws, two rows of masking tape and scissors. We also could use anything we could find around us and in our bags. We were given 1hour and thirty minutes to make our castle. We quickly rushed to a random spot and started. We did the walls  first by taping 26 straws together.  We had to make four of those. I cut a hole out of  one of the walls to make a doorway. We made the door out of straws. Then, we made the roof out of straws and aluminum foil. After all of that, we compared each o

Games & Singing Fun, 16th Sept 2017

Written by: Bryan Low, Assistant Sixer & Scribe Today, after assembling in school at 9.00 p.m., we started with our normal horseshoe. After the horseshoe, we lined up in our Indian file. When we had sat down, Baloo told us that today, we would be going to different classrooms on level 1 to do something … We were put into 3 groups to go to our separate classrooms. The grouping was pretty much like a headcount, except we restarted once we reached 3. After we got our groups, we were assigned teachers to take us to our classrooms and help us with the activity. So, went to our separate classes. Once we were in the classroom, our teacher, Mdm Kerina, took out a set of cards. What could we possibly be doing with those cards? I wondered. My question was soon answered by Mdm Kerina. “With this set of cards, you will have to pick one to explain yourself, then later, scouting.” She said. After she explained what we were to do, we lined up in three rows and started picking ca

North Area Solar Oven Competition, 26th August 2017

Written by: Trisha Chan, Senior Sixer & Scribe Today, our cub scout meeting was very special and different. Because, three different Cub Scout units came to our school! They were going to compete against us in the Solar Oven Challenge. There were two rounds, the first round was judged based on Construction, Creativity and Design. The second round was based on how well the oven worked. We had two hours to complete our solar oven. Halfway through the two hours, we ate a snack, which consisted of curry puffs and egg with mayo sandwiches. Then, we got right back to work! Then, after we were done with our solar ovens, we all worked together to clean up the Kidzone. After that, we went for lunch! We had chicken, sunny side up eggs, brow and white rice, boiled cabbage with carrots, and fish balls. Then, we sang some songs! Soon after, the winners were announced! When we heard the name of the winners, we felt sad, as many of us had made friends among the other units.

Akela Award Assessment, 26th August 2017

Written by: Joanne Koong, Sixer & Scribe leader Today, eight of us attended the Akela Award assessment conducted by the Scouts HQ - 4 P5s and 4 P6s, accompanied by Mr Ng. We were surprisingly calm while in the bus. The boys were discussing possible interview questions and one of them was “How has scouting helped you in your daily life?” Hmm… I started to ponder. I have had 3.5 years of scouting and have so much experience to share! When we arrived at Yangzhen Primary School, we were each given a piece of duck tape with a number on it, to be placed on our uniforms above our squirrel and bumble bee badges. We were then assigned to our groups. There were at least 200 candidates, divided into 9 groups. All of us took the Scout Promise, after which we were led to our respective activities. I was in C2 and my group, together with A2 and B2, did the written test first. I noticed that there were more questions on First Aid in the paper. After the written test, we then proceede

Fun with Pasta, 19th August 2017

Written by: Joanne Koong, Sixer & Scribe leader The Kidzone was bustling with excitement and laughter as the cubs talked excitedly about our activity that day. We were going to do art and craft! We started our meeting with the Colour Party, along with the Grand Howl. We then moved into Indian file and Raksha briefed us on what we were going to do. She began by introducing 4 different types of pasta: elbow-shaped, long, shell-shaped and curly. Thereafter, Raksha instructed the sixers to collect the materials we needed for our activity -- pasta and a vanguard sheet with the pelican logo and our respective six names with the animal pasted on it. We were instructed to go to various areas in the Kidzone and start working on our projects. Each six was given one hour to complete the task. After sitting down, I shared with my six what we could do and how we could go about completing our task. I divided my six into 3 groups of 2 - Trisha and I were in charge of the border of th

Hike, 12th August 2017

Image
Written by: Bryan Low, Assistant Sixer & Scribe Today, we came to school for scouts at 6 a.m. The reason why we had come so early is because today, we were going to have a hike. As I sat down at the front of my Six (since we had no Sixer yet), I could feel the excitement of the other scouts building in the air. I too was very excited. After most of the scouts had come, we stood up for the Senior Sixer, Trisha, to take the attendance. We were instructed that when our name was called, we were to say “here” and then sit down. When we had finished taking attendance, we waited for the few people who came late. Next, we took a head count. It started with a scout saying one, then two, then three, and so on. After we were done with the head count, we were told to take out our bottles, drink a sip of water, then either go to the toilet, refill your water bottle, of both. Then, we were ready to board the buses. Six by Six, we slowly started boarding the buses, the Sixes with gir

Rope Crawling, 5th August 2017

Written by; Syed Hafiz, Assistant Senior Sixer & Scribe “ Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!” the senior sixer Trisha blew the whistle to indicate horseshoe. The scouts flag rose high during colour party. We did one minute of silence and tied a knot on the left side of our scarf. After horseshoe, Trisha told us to line up in Indian file. Mdm. Kerina told us that we were going to do rope crawling! All of us were very excited as rope crawling sounded very fun. Mdm. Kerina called us six by six to come outside of the Kidzone. When we saw Mr. Tan adjusting the ropes onto the tree, we were scared as we did not know if it could take our weight. But when Mr. Tan showed us how to do it, we were confident. We went in order starting from Primary 1 to Primary 5. Since it was taking too long, Mr. Cheong tied another rope to the tree to start another queue. The Primary 4s went to the other rope that Mr. Cheong tied. When I saw the queues, they were so long I did not know what time we wer

Shelter Building, 29th July 2017

Image
Written by: Cheong Yew Chung, Assistant Sixer & Scribe The day started when the whistle blew and the command of horseshoe was given by the Senior Sixer, Trisha. My Six and I were in position in our horse shoe formation. Soon the colour party started. It was Emu’s turn to do it. After the colour party and the administration stuff such as taking attendance, we begin with the main activity of the day. Mr Cheong taught us how to build a simple basha (shelter). He introduced the various equipments needed for basha building. Mr Cheong also shown us some pictures of various designs of basha. After the introduction, we were told our task for today -- each Six had to build a basha.  The respective Six were all eager to start building our own basha.  My Six and I started the shelter building. It looked easy but was actually harder that it looked.  Gaven and I hammered two poles onto the ground, but the poles kept falling down. So we had to use the pegs and some string

Environment, Conservation & Recycling, 22nd July 2017

Written by: Trisha Chan, Senior Sixer & Scribe Today, for our scout meeting today, after Colour Party, the first thing that we did was to collect the Donation Draw ticket stubs. Next, we went to the nearest classroom to the Kidzone, to learn about what we can do to conserve energy and resources . Then, while every six played a recycling game, the rest of us cub scouts did some environment worksheets. After that, we did a lot of funny versions of our favorite song, ‘Boom Chicka Boom’ For example, some scouts did a ‘zombie’ version and some scouts did a ‘party’ version… Too soon, we had to get into horseshoe formation to commence Sunset Party. However, Mr Tan had one last game for us to play! To play this game, you have to ‘bomb’ a six. And with that, our annual scout meeting ended with Sunset Party and heavy hearts.

Handover Ceremony, 15th July 2017

Written by Joanne Koong, Sixer & Scribe leader Today’s horseshoe held special significance for Shafiq and Kylie, our dear senior sixers. This was their last meeting as the P6 scouts would be stepping down to prepare for PSLE. After the horseshoe, Mdm Kerina gave out progress and proficiency badges. The cub with the biggest haul was YiHan with 9 badges! Next was the announcement of the new leaders of the Pack…. Everyone was reeling in excitement, wondering who our new senior sixers would be. Those of us who attended the Sixers’ Training Camp in June were anxious to know if we would get an appointment or a promotion. Firstly, the assistant sixers were called out to receive their new appointment, certificate and badge from Mr Tan Cheng Kiong, our Chief Commissioner. Next were the sixers. I was promoted to a sixer! I was over the moon! Sadly, there were three sixes without a sixer. All the assistant sixers were informed that some of them might be promoted to a sixer over the

Solar Oven, 8th July 2017

Written by: Jasper Koh, Sixer & Scribe “Beep! Beep! Beep!” the Senior Sixer blew his whistle and everyone lined up in Horse shoe and after that we lined up in Indian file. We started the meeting off by handing out badges! Quite a lot of people got their Bronze and Sliver arrows and some proficiency badges too! After giving out all the badges, we started on with our next activity! The people who were going for the Akela Award stepped out as they were going to get their First-Aider badge! The rest of us sat there until Mr Tan came. He told us that we will be making Solar-Ovens using shoe boxes! Everyone was so excited that everyone was talking to one another about it. We then listened to the instructions given out and were ready to start. We were then dismissed to our Six’s corner and we took our materials and started building the Solar-Oven! Although some of us didn’t bring some materials, we lent each other some of the materials. After we completed our ovens, Baloo cam
