Solar Oven, 8th July 2017
Written by: Jasper Koh, Sixer & Scribe
“Beep! Beep! Beep!” the Senior Sixer blew his
whistle and everyone lined up in Horse shoe and after that we lined up in
Indian file. We started the meeting off by handing out badges! Quite a lot of
people got their Bronze and Sliver arrows and some proficiency badges too!
After giving out all the badges, we started on
with our next activity! The people who were going for the Akela Award stepped
out as they were going to get their First-Aider badge! The rest of us sat there
until Mr Tan came. He told us that we will be making Solar-Ovens using shoe
boxes! Everyone was so excited that everyone was talking to one another about
it. We then listened to the instructions given out and were ready to start.
We were then dismissed to our Six’s corner and
we took our materials and started building the Solar-Oven! Although some of us
didn’t bring some materials, we lent each other some of the materials. After we
completed our ovens, Baloo came and told us that our Solar Oven should be
painted black and explained the reason why.
Next, they chose 1 Solar Oven from each Six and
the adult leaders painted it black for us. Not long after, the paint dried up
and we were ready to begin cooking food! Everyone was given an egg and we
cracked the egg into our aluminum tray and placed it into the Solar Oven. We
then lined back in Indian file and sang some songs lead by the Senior Sixer
while waiting for the egg to cook.
We waited and waited till it was the end of our
meeting. Much to our disappointment, the egg that was in the Solar Oven did not
cook. We lined back up in Horse shoe and lowered the flag. I really hope the
next time we would have more time to cook the food and hopefully it will be
cooked. We all went back home looking forward to the next scout meeting!
