Henry Park Pelican (Cub) Scout

Written by Farren Lee, Sixer & Scribe On 27th July, we cub scouts went for a journey to Fort Canning Park for a fun time using an app descriptly titled BalikSG. We arrived at Hotel Fort Canning and slowly made our way to Fort Canning Centre. From there, we were separated into 2 groups who went on different ways.   My group went to Farquar Garden first. Due to the extremely horrible way this app works, some of us were confused on how to scan the codes and how to read them.   Navigating around Fort Canning was difficult at first but after fiddling around with the map and even using Compass on our phone, the rest of the trip went on smoothly. A few hundred metres up a hill was Artisan Garden, which had nice views looking down to the garden. Written By Ross Pary, Deputy Senior Sixer and Chief Scribe Today was a very special day for me for two reasons: one, I took part in the Japanese homestay program and was allowed to bring my buddy, Uta to scouts. Secondly, it was the day of the Handover ceremony! This meant that the primary six appointment holders would step down and let the primary four and five scouts takeover. However, the handover was at 11am, so I had to wait two long hours. Before the handover, we had a few activities. First was compass reading. I was very excited as this was a part of the difficult map reading badge. After a while, we had learned to use a compass. Then, Mr Cheong taught us about map reading skills. He taught us how to use the online Street Directory and how to plan a route. He also told us what to look for when on the route. Written by Ross Pary, Asst Sixer and Scribe It was a sunny Saturday morning as I went to Henry Park to attend my scout’s meeting. My fellow scouts and I assisted our juniors in attaining their badges before the meeting started. After the sunrise ceremony, Mr Tan showed us how to do the rolling hitch. It was a bit difficult but I managed to get it on my 3 rd try. To do the rolling hitch, you need to loop the tag end of the rope around an item. Secondly, you need to bring the rope down behind the item. After that, you need to bring the rope up, wrapping the item. Then, you need to pass the rope between the straps. Finally, pull both ends of the rope to tighten the item. We used our shoelace as a rope and our limbs to practice on. After untying our rolling hitches, we headed to Music Room 1. There, Baloo taught us these three songs; “Heal the world”, “We are the world” and “I’ll be there”. They were all sung by Michael Jackson. They represent love, unity and respon...

I quickly took the bus in my green uniform and was at the Kidzone at about 8.40 a.m. Today we were going to have the Amazing Trail meeting! Whenever I hear those words, my memories go back to all the four years I have taken part in the Amazing Trail! I have even taken part in the 10th anniversary of the Trail!:) After the colour party, we assembled in Indian File. Baloo went through the Scout Promise. Which is :       “On my honour, I promise that I’ll do my best, to do my duty to god, and to the Republic of Singapore. To help other people, and to keep the Scout Law” After that, Mr Tan taught us how to do the clove hitch. A while later, Mr Cheong taught all of us how to do a head and arm bandage with our scarf! It was especially easy for me as I had taken part in the First Aid Course for the AKELA AWARD ! ...

I was talking to some of the Akela candidates and found out they had their First Aid Badge test. Most of them were sixers so when getting ready we had to appoint acting sixers. As none of Possum’s sixer and assistant sixer were available to do colour party so we had last minute plans and changed to Wallaby. After colour party, all assembled together. Mr Cheong told us the plan and we moved to the PAL room for the meeting. The first part of the meeting, we learnt to fold clothes so it would be easier to fit more clothes in our camp backpack and the clothes will not roll out. Mr Cheong us a new method to fold the clothes in a snug and tight bundle. Before teaching us, he brought a backpack that could last a 3 days 2 night camp, Baloo even said it could last 5 days and 4 nights. Written by Bryan Low, Sixer & Scribe I came to school very early at 7.20 a.m., and was really excited as today, we would be having our last job week briefing before setting out to begin our job week. I put down my bag and talked with my friends for a while before the senior sixer, Min Rei, blowed the whistle signal for horseshoe and i quickly got into my position in the horseshoe. We did the usual colour party, said the scout promise, and lined up in indian file to begin the briefing. Once in indian file, the sixers were asked to think up of a few skits to show good and bad examples of scouts and different people we meet. While we prepared the skits, the other scouts were briefed about job week with more detail. Mr Tan mentioned something very important: never use “donation”, and instead use “contribution”. By Chong Min Rei, Senior Sixer and Scribe The sun was rising, I had just arrived for the scout meeting. I saw some cubs were playing while some of them were talking to each other. Kai Fong and I were setting up the flag for colour party with some of the cubs. There were cubs signing their badges and some cubs bonding with others. I blew my whistle signalling it was time for Colour Party. After Colour Party, Kai Fong and I with some help from cubs, we collected rocks and sticks to build a trail for those who had not done it. Although it was tiring, it trained my eyesight and also helped with time management. We decided to do a rock trail, only made up of only rocks, and a stick trail, only made up of sticks. While we were collecting the sticks and rocks, Mr tan was teaching the other cubs a new knot. They then had Six Corner to talk to their cubs about getting badges and the new knot they had learnt.
