Games Day on 2 Nov 2024
By Platypus Sixer Dinesh
The morning unfolded like any other, filled with the familiar sounds of excitement of cubs talking about the games day that was about to begin. Some scouts busily checked badges, while others engaged in lively conversations, sharing jokes and stories. The atmosphere buzzed with energy and anticipation. Soon, it was time for the Sixers to bring out the flagpole. We carefully secured it in place, and before I knew it, the Senior Sixers blew their whistle, prompting everyone to rush into the horseshoe formation.
After the colour party, we quickly organised ourselves into Indian Files. Hathi announced that we would be completing the Term 4 DJC (Diamond Jubilee Challenge) that day, a task that had everyone’s attention. She handed out worksheets to each scout, explaining that the questions were based on the badges we had earned throughout the year.
The unit then split into Six Corner, where the Cubs eagerly grabbed their writing materials and yellow booklets, their eyes shining with determination. With a time limit of 45 minutes, everyone settled in, focusing intently on their tasks. The Kidzone was filled with the sound of pencils scratching against paper, as each Cub worked diligently, eager to make the most of the time they had.
Once the time was up, we lined up in Indian Files again. Hathi collected the worksheets, and then she called out to those who hadn’t completed their logbooks. She asked them to grab their writing materials and join her to finish their logbook.
Then, the real fun began! We gathered our water bottles and, six by six, made our way to the lower ISH, where Grey Wolf was already waiting. After Grey Wolf explained the game, we rushed to the starting area, filled with anticipation. There were three stages: egg, chick, and rooster. Everyone started off as an egg, and to ‘level up,’ you had to challenge another Cub of the same level in a game of rock-paper-scissors. The winner would advance while the loser would fall back. If you managed to reach the highest stage, rooster, before time ran out, you would be declared as one of the winners.
After a few rounds of spirited competition, we gathered in Indian Files again, eagerly awaiting the next game. Grey Wolf explained the rules, and we all dove into the game, laughing and cheering each other on. After about 15 minutes, Grey Wolf transitioned to the final activity, keeping our spirits high and our excitement levels soaring.
After around 20 minutes and three sessions of play, it was time to return to the Kidzone. Six by six, we left the lower ISH, animatedly discussing the fun games Grey Wolf had organised for us and sharing our triumphs and funny moments from the day.
Once we gathered in Indian Files, Hathi began handing out badges. She also awarded the athlete proficiency badge to those who had successfully completed it, and cheers filled the Kidzone as many received bronze, silver, and even gold badges.
Soon after, the Senior Sixers blew their whistle, signalling the start of the sunset party. Everyone quickly took their positions. “Keluar baris!” Senior Sixer Zac shouted. With no Sixer Council in place, everyone dashed to their bags, in a flurry of laughter and excitement. I could not wait for the 20th Anniversary Dinner that would be taking place the following week.
That morning was filled with joy and laughter, leaving a lasting impression on all of us, including me.
