First Meeting 13 Jan 2024
By Senior Sixer Donald Or
At 8:30 am, quite a lot of people had already reached school and were sitting down patiently. The sixers started to bring out the flagpole and into the kidzone. They then tied the flag to the flagpole. Luckily, the senior sixers tied it on the right side this time. Soon, the senior sixers blew the whistle and the cubs gathered into horseshoe formation.
The new recruits formed a squad behind the horseshoe formation. There were quite a number of new recruits. After colour party, the recruits followed Kaa and Grey wolf to Kidzone 2 for their activities.
As for the main pack, after the colour party everyone gathered into the Indian file. The senior sixers gave the sixers files for attendance. After that, the unit was split up into a few groups and they went to various stations, each conducting a lesson by a leader. The first station was conducted by Bagheera and he taught the cubs about the values a pelican has and why it is inside our scout troop’s name.
The second station was conducted by Baloo and he told the cubs the jungle book story. He also taught them how to use “EARS” standing for: Encourage, Ask questions, Reflect and Summarize.
Finally, the third station was conducted by Dragonheart & Luke, who summarized what we had learnt.
The different stations had taught the cubs about the different characters that represent our scouting leaders.
Next, the unit was split into age groups and split up to different areas to practice for drill. It was very tiring and some people needed to get used to turning only with their feet.
Next, we practiced some campfire songs in preparation for next week's campfire.
Soon, it was time for sunset party and the senior sixers blew the whistle. They brought down the flag and saluted.
As usual, everyone rushed off after but the sixers and senior sixers stayed behind for sixer’s council. During the sixers council, they were asked to write down 3 words that came to their minds about the day’s activities.
First, they shared the words they wrote, then others would give their opinions and solution to the problem if there were any. It was different from the usual sixer’s council where they would relflect on what went wrong and what went right. It was a meaningful day and the cubs got to meet each other after a long holiday.
