Sixers Training Camp 30th June - 02nd July
SIXERS TRAINING CAMP 2012
DAY 1 30th June 2012
32 Cubs were chosen for this year's Sixers Training Camp.
Cubs assembled early on Saturday morning for the pre-camp formalities. They were assigned to their respective Six, namely Elephant, Giraffe and Hippo. Camp fees were collected, journals distributed and after a review of rules, they boarded onto the waiting bus for the journey to Terror Sea Scout Camp at Sembawang.
Service Scouts (P6s) were on hand to help load the camp gear, with the help of Eagle Scouts.
On arrival at the camp, Cubs were given instructions on tent pitching, their abode for the next 3 days, come wind or high water! Eagle Scouts were on hand to help in the pitching. Well, they actually did most of the work, really!
After lunch, Baloo taught Cubs some new songs. As the speaker was not hooked up yet, Cubs couldn't get into the full swing of singing. Baloo promised that once the speaker was hooked up, Cubs would have a chance to practice their new songs.
Cubs were then taught the Grand Howl, the ceremonial circle that all Cubs around the world form up prior to the start of meetings. Training then went on to some simple foot drills.
Eagle Scouts taught Cubs firelighting. Preparing the fireplace was the most crucial part of firelighting. It would make a difference between success or failure!
DAY 2 01st July 2012
Following the usual morning exercise, inspection took up the best part of the morning. Service Scouts reveled in this area!
Akela led a discussion on the qualities of a Sixer, using the word S-I-X-E-R.
Baloo then taught Cubs their chosen dance, "Beat It", "Grease Lightning" and "Time For Africa", to be performed at the campfire later in the evening. Baloo roped in the Service Scouts to teach "Time For Africa".
Team Challenge saw Cubs trying to accomplish 3 challenges. Each challenge required coordination, teamwork, cooperation and leadership. Eagle Scouts were on hand to provide guidance, and critique at the end of the challenge.
Outdoor cooking was a highlight, as most Cubs would not have had any opportunity to strike a match, let alone light and sustain a fire for cooking.
Cubs sang and danced during the campfire. In fact, they performed very well during the dance items despite having s very little time to prepare and rehearse. Well done, Cubs.
After bidding their parents tearful farewells, they soon forgot about home and dived straight into the soapy water slide.
DAY 3 02nd July 2012
Time to strike the tents. With Eagle Scouts helping out, it was then time for some games before bidding goodbye to their home for the last 3 days, bringing back with them lessons on leadership, cooperation and initiative.
