Annual Campfire 11th February 2012
By Scribe Brandon Khaw
Hooray! The annual campfire will be held later this evening and I have the Saturday morning free to enjoy.
Besides being held for the first time in the new Mount Sinai campus, the kickoff for the campfire was conducted in a totally different way. The Eagle Scouts had hung a string from the 2nd level to the nicely arranged pile of wood at the ground level. When the Principal declared the start of the campfire, the ball was lit up and like a live “fireball” sliding down to the pile of wood. Boom! The pile of wood burst into flames! All the scouts, recruits, parents, teachers, Vice-Principals and Principal cheered and clapped loudly. Then in unison, we all sang our hearts out - our first campfire song - Campfire’s burning, campfire’s burning……..
The games segment is always a favourite for many. It is time to get off our seat and join in the fun. When the music for LIMBO rock came on, many scouts surged forward and very quickly formed a line and jumped into action! Everyone had a great time showing off their flexibility in bending their body backwards and crossing under the pole. To some new recruits and their parents, they might be pleasantly surprised at the level of enthusiasm shown by the scouts. This was also how I felt when I was once a recruit.
As the sixers were preparing for the skit, they discovered that their props were locked in and they could not find a way to unlock the door. Fortunately, the teacher managed to locate the spare keys and they gained access. Shortly, the sixers came out in full battle gear and the “war” between Queen and King Zulu began. Though I was familiar with the storyline, I felt that this year’s performers portrayed the characters with more enthusiasm.
Sadly, this will be the final time that I will be part of the campfire as I journey through my P6 year at Henry Park. I know that I shall return just like many of the ex-Pelicans who return to enjoy the magical moments of the Annual Campfire.
