AMAZING UNUSUAL PLACES TRAIL

Akela briefed participants on the theme of the trail, rules and tips. Cubs are to scour the island in search of unusual places, given by encrypted clues. Points will be earned on successful location of these places and additional points earned upon successful completion of pre-determined tasks. Facilitators, comprising former Pelicans, volunteers from HSBC and our team of young adult leaders would ensure strict compliance of the rules.
Our annual family bonding trail is here again. After weeks of preparation, briefings and research, some 260 Cubs, parents and siblings gathered in the wschool hall for a final briefing, and to find out the theme of this year's trail - Unusual Places.

A discussion to map out strategies, and off the teams went in their quest to score the most points, and at the same time, spend some quality time with their parents and siblings.

While the teams were away, volunteers busied themselves with preparing for the gala dinner that would follow this evening. Tables and chairs had to be positioned, the table decorations done, sound systems checked and rechecked. The following were instrumental in getting the hall ready for the evening's event: Cynthia Yong, June Phang, Charmaine Hee, Sylvia Yip, Cheow Sue-Ann and Andre Yong.

Other unusual destinations:
1. Colbar - a former mess/canteen of the old British Army. Relocated in 2004 and feature a heritage wall.
2. Hai Bin Prawning - located next to a Golf course, amongst motor workshops and a temple, enthusiasts catch fresh water prawns with pincers.
3. Live Turtle & Tortoise Museum - located in the west.
4. Little Guilin Park - a former granite quarry, now transformed into a park, similar to scenic Guilin, China.
5. Capitol Building - featuring plaster casts of celebrities, Singapore's own Walk of Fame. An 80 year old cinema, now closed, in the vicinity.
6. Singapore Crocodile Farm - located in north-east Singapore, find crocodiles bred in captivity
7. Bottle Tree Park - a privately owned park, with the unique Bottle Tree, resembling a bowling pin.
8. Army Market - place to buy military abd camping equipment
9. Far East Flora - Singapore's largest fresh flowers wholesaler, where flowers are kept fresh in a cold room.
10. Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle - possibly the only Dragon Kiln in Singapore, where traditional wood-ash firing still takes place.
11. German Girl Shrine - a shrine of a foreign girl who met with an accident in WWI, on Pulau Ubin.
12. Thieves' Market - Singapore's oldest and largest flea market.
13. Changi Museum - museum dedicated to Singapore's history during the japanese Occupation.
Teams started arriving from 1645hrs, with all teams save one arriving by the deadline of 1700hrs. The last team would incur a penalty for arriving past the deadline.
Baloo got the crowd perked up with the promise of a wonderful evening of entertaining performances, games and song.
The arrival of our Guest-of-honour, Chief Commissioner Mr. Tan Cheng Khiong was heralded by the hypnotic beat of drums and percussions from Drumworks, a percussion group.
The Gala Dinner went into full swing, starting with Throwing of the Yarn, our annual ritual to signify bonding of the brotherhood of Scouts.
During dinner, a slide show of the day's proceedings was shown. Drumworks took to the stage with an inimitable performance of percussion instruments. Great job!
The Henry Park Pelican Singers wowed everyone with 'Heal The World' and 'We Are The World', two very meaningful and inspiring songs.
After a day of family bonding, Baloo reminded everyone that we were indeed blessed with good health, and it was appropriate that we shared our blessings with the less fortunate. Among the 3 charities that HPPS was supporting, everyone decided to make a donation to the Children's Cancer Society. With the big heartedness of HPPS parents, their very generous donations amounted to a total of $2245, an achievement that was way past expectations. Well done, parents.
The Pelican Singers then performed "I'll Be There" and "Reach", to the delight of everyone. Well done, singers.
Games time saw participants stacking apples and blowing cups off the table with balloons.
Singing "Scout Hymn", this signalled the close of the night's event.
It was indeed a very fruitful day, with family bonding, making new friends, great performances and fund raising for a great cause. THANK YOU!
