1st Cub Scout Meeting 2010

Saturday 16th January 2010

After almost a 2-month break for the year end school holidays, it's back to Scouting again. Hooray!!!!

Cubs gathered at the Kidz Zone as usual, and the Horse Shoe was formed. This being the first meeting for the year, all the VALs were present, namely Akela, Raksha, Bagheera, Chil, Grey Wolf and Baloo. Miss Tan and a new teacher-in-charge was also present. There were also 30 odd new boys and girls who were keen to join our Pelican Cub Scout family.

After the customary Colour Party, Cubs formed up in Indian file. Today would be the day Cubs re-acquainted themselves with some basic lessons on Scouting and footdrill.

First off, Baloo revised the Grand Howl, a ceremony practised by Cubs throughout the world, to start off a meeting of the wolf pack. It is a pity that this ceremony has not been standard practise in Singapore Cub Scouting. Pelican Cubs aim to maintain this meaningful ceremony!

Baloo and Bagheera revised some basic footdrill commands with the Cubs, many of whom had forgotten the drills, and needed a quick revision in footdrill commands. Some were still unsure between 'kiri' and 'kanan', while there were also some who were unclear about 'ke-kanan lurus'.

Thirty six recruits (3 of them girls) joined us in this first meeting for recruits. After joining in the unit for the flag break ceremony, Akela took the recruits to the bus-bay area for attendance taking, followed by some warm-up activities.

To test whether the recruits were able to take instructions, Akela played the 'Do this. Do that' game, where recruits are to follow Akela's actions if he shouted 'Do this', but not to follow if it's 'Do that'. Akela then explained what was special about scouting - the scout sign, scout salute, shaking with left hand, etc. He also explained the 3 parts of the Scout Promise, and the meaning of a promise.

In between, several games were played, to the delight of the recruits. The group was broken up into 6 teams, and 2 relayed games were played - one legged race and the octopus race, with Team 2 emerging the winners. To round off the games, captain's ball was played, scout style (no running, all players to be squatting or sitting when passing the ball). Team A beat Team B 10-1. All winners were given prizes.

All too soon, the meeting came to an end, and Akela issued the consent form and packing list for the following week's Recruits' Induction Camp. Most of the recruits enjoyed the meeting, but for some, getting used to the discipline of sitting in straight lines, keeping quiet when Akela was talking, and obeying instructions was a challenge.

Baloo engaged the Cubs in a revision of the Scout Promise and Law.

"On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and the Republic of Singapore
To help other people, and to keep the Scout Law"

As next week would be the annual campfire, Baloo practised some campfire songs with the Cubs. He was relieved to know that Cubs were generally able to sing in tune. Well done, Cubs.

It was time for games, which got everyone excited. Bagheera had planned a 'chicken' game where 3 Cubs would form the chicken, namely the head and beak, the body and flapping wings, and the tail of a chicken. Cubs had to move together and maintain the form of the chicken, pick up a hat, and travel a short distance, all the time maintaining the form.

Next, Cubs asked for the 'Amoeba' game. The girls were assigned to be the 'amoeba' while the rest of the pack ran helter skelter to avoid being caught.

As there was some time left, Cubs played the 'Frog' game, where the 'Frog' would stick out his tongue and 'kill' off as many Cubs as possible before being found out by one volunteer. Nobody got the 'Frog'.

At 12 noon, it was time for Sunset Party, followed by Sixers Council. Sixers were reminded to prepare a skit for the campfire and Induction Camp next week. Mirreille would be in charge of the skit.
