Written by: Lucas Tan, Senior Sixer 2013-2014 & Guest Scribe This Saturday, the long awaited P6 Scout Activities had finally arrived.I couldn't believe it - We, the Primary 6 Scouts have retired and it was time for our "retirement party".  What did we do? Awesome stuff. The first thing we did was - Archery. We went to Ace Archery and learnt the basic skills of archery. We even got to put our skills to the test! Aim and Draw then... Fire! With a thump, our arrows hit home. The first part was target practice. We had loads of fun attempting to shoot the bullseye! Soon, we did a little more fun game. Using the bow arrow, we had to pop some balloons. Some of us managed to pop the balloons on the first try while others took two or three. It was really great fun, having the feel of being an archer! We felt so pro. After a hearty McDonalds lunch, we went for a few rounds of bowling. With the bowling pins in sight, we ran forward and rolled the bowling ball........ Wh...

Night Hike & Kite Flying, 11th October 2014

Written by: Janice Koong, Assistant Senior Sixer 2013-2014 and Guest S cribe “Call Indian File and take attendance,” Raksha instructed Claudia and Evangel, the Senior Sixers. Within minutes, Indian File was formed, attendance was taken and Chil was ready to brief us on the 2 nd last activity of the year, our night hike. Although the consent form said that we would be hiking from Tanjong Rhu to Marina Barrage, Chil explained that the hike had to be shortened due to the haze. He also explained the various safety precuations and soon we filled two buses, heading to Marina Barrage. After a long ride, we finally reached Marina Barrage. We were greeted by a huge group of people, as there was an event going on. We quickly got into Indian File next to the carpark and waited for further instructions. Chil told us that we would spend the next half an hour or so colouring our kites and after that fly them. The cubs seemed rather enthusiatic and in no time everybd...

Akela Award Assessment, 11 October 2014

Image
I followed the group of Akela Award candidates to the Scout Headquarters in Bishan for our final round of assessment. We were proudly dressed in full scout uniform and the national scarf for the first time, looking extremely neat. Written by: Caleb Liow, Sixer 2013-2014 & Guest Scribe   We arrived at our location and we were split into several groups with other cub scouts from other packs. I was placed in group B3 and we proceeded to complete my quiz. It tested us on our knowledge of the first-aid, track and trail , the history of scouting .... Afterwards, my group played a series of three simple games to assess our teamwork and leadership skills. Upon reflection, I could have performed better and I feel that my group fared best in the “human knot” game and the worst in the “floating straw” game. Even the senior scout observing us was impressed by how fast we entangled ourselves and agreed that we could have co-operated better in the other game. Fi...

Badges & Games, 27th September 2014

Written by: Evangel Wong, Assistant Senior Sixer & Scribe BEEP!” “BEEEEEEEPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!” Everybody rushed to gather in horse shoe.We did the normal routines and gathered in Indian file. Baloo asked us how many people have already earned our gold arrow. A few hands shot up, but Baloo was not satisfied :( Baloo asked how many people got their silver arrow...still not many people raised their hands (Baloo shook his head..) Then Baloo asked how many people have their bronze arrow. A few more people raised their hands but Baloo was not impressed... Baloo smiled, then laughed then shook his head.(Baloo was disappointed!) He told us that we all have to try to get our bronze arrow at least. He told everybody to break up in our six and HELP EACH OTHER so we could earn more badges. Baloo instructed the ones which got their bronze arrow to help the ones who do not have it and the ones who got their sliver arrow to help the ones which got bronze arrow but n...

Fun & Games, 20th September 2014

Written by: Daniel Por, Assistant Senior Sixer & Scribe “BEEP…BEEP…BEEP!!!” The whistle sounds rang through the air, loud and clear. Hearing this, the Henry Park Pelican Scout group quickly arranged themselves into horseshoe formation. There was a bit of a hiccup when the flag was tied the wrong way, but we managed to get it under control and put the flag the right way up. After all the usual formalities, Baloo came in and talked about the TFG 2000 event. He asked us to describe the best part of the event to those who did not come. Unsurprisingly, many of us thought it was the free Pocari Sweat handed out at the end of the event. He also touched on the Green Corridor hike, and asked us for the lessons that we learnt from the hike. One of the many answers was, “Nature is Beautiful”. Baloo then touched on the outdoor cooking event. He talked about fire safety, and told us to never leave a fire unattended. After that, he taught us about the various ways we can keep safe...

Community Service - TFG2000, 6th September 2014

Written by: Claudia Kong, Senior Sixer & Scribe Today is the special day!  The Henry Park Pelican Scout group is going out for our big adventure! We are going to the Sengkang Sport and Recreation Centre for our community service work for TFG2000. By 7.30am, the area in front of our "koi" pond was crowded with many chattering cub scouts. ” Beep!... Beep!....” the senior sixers' whistle signalled everyone to gather. After doing all of the administrative, we boarded the bus to our destination. Upon arrival we saw a lot of people and best of all… GAMES!!! We had a few rehearsals for the pledge. Our first task was to welcome the Guest of Honor, Dr. Lam Pin Min. After his speech, we did some warming-up exercises together with the VIPs. Our second task was the best and personally my favourite, we were asked to go around with some badges and whenever we see someone, we go out to them and share the TFG2000 message… This is how it goes…     "Hi! I...

Outdoor Cooking, 30th August 2014

Written by: Cheong Yew Meng, Assistant Sixer & Scribe “Beep….beep! HORSESHOE!” The Senior Sixers blew their whistles. I immediately gathered together with my Sixer .Doing my job as a new Assistant Sixer, I helped the others get in line. After horseshoe, we gathered in indian file. Baloo scolded the scouts that came late and the scouts that were missing parts of their uniform. I hoped the scouts have learnt their lessons and not repeat the same mistakes again. For this week, we have a fun and interesting activity – Outdoor Cooking. All of us are going to be transformed into mini-chefs and cooks! We started cooking at 10 am. The most challenging part of Outdoor Cooking was to start a fire using only twigs and matchsticks. With the assistance of the Leaders and the learning from the recent Sixer Training Camp , we managed to start the fire. I was in charge of cutting the fruits and vegetables. After finishing cutting, we brought the food to cook! We cooked egg with...
