VIA: Chinese New Year Celebration on 25 January 2025

By Deputy Senior Sixer Zeqi

Today, we celebrated Chinese New Year with the elderly residents from AWWA. The day started early, with everyone gathering and lining up in an orderly fashion. Hathi then briefed us on the arts and crafts segment, which was one of the key activities planned for the day. Our task was to guide the elderly in creating a fun dragon craft, a meaningful way to embrace the festive spirit together.
Next, Grey Wolf explained the game to the sixers, preparing us to teach both the cubs and the elders. The game involved a box with a hole the size of a ping pong ball. A few ping pong balls were placed inside the box, and four strings attached to the box were each held by one elderly from each group. Their goal was to move the box by tugging on the strings, aiming to drop the balls into the hole. It was a fun, simple challenge that encouraged teamwork and coordination.
After the briefings, we headed to the bus bay to invite the elderly to join us. Once everyone was settled at the KidZone, we played the game, fostering interaction between the elders and the kids. We then moved to the canteen for the arts and crafts session. Each elderly participant created a dragon, which they got to take home as a keepsake. The activity lasted about 20 minutes before it was time for lunch. The Malay stall had prepared delicious food for the elders, while the cubs enjoyed some bread to refuel.
After lunch, we cleaned up the area and then gathered for a round of bingo, where the elders could win prizes. The atmosphere was light and joyful, and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
As the day came to a close, it was time to bid farewell to the elderly participants. We escorted them back to the bus bay, where we said our goodbyes, grateful for the time spent together.
Today was such a rewarding experience. Seeing the elders light up while spending time with the younger cubs was so heartwarming. It’s incredible how simple things like games and crafts can bring people together across generations, building understanding and connection. Watching those moments unfold made me realize just how important it is to spend time with and honor our elders. It was a reminder that the little moments we share can create memories that last, and I feel lucky to have been part of it.
