First Aid Course on 13 April 2024

By Possum Sixer Favian Poh

When we were done with the sunrise party, we got into Indian file and Ikki told us to bring our first aid kit. Then, Ikki went through what we must bring in our first aid kit and use other people’s first aid kit and show what is right and what is wrong.
After that, we got split into groups for first aid - the 1st year cubs, 2nd year cubs, 3rd year cubs and the P6s.
The new scouts learnt about basic first aid. They covered cuts, bruises, stings. They also learnt how to disinfect a wound and put on plaster.
The 2nd year scouts recapped on how to disinfect a wound. They learnt how to tie an arm sling and a figure 8 bandage.
The 3rd year scouts recapped on how to tie an arm sling. They learnt how to tie a head bandage. They also learnt how to immobilising a limb.
During the P6 first aid, we recapped the head bandage and arm sling and tried to do it on our own. It was quite challenging for some of us but we managed to do it after many attempts. Then, we learnt a new provide first aid to a new situation, i.e. if someone was stabbed in the stomach area. We should not pull out the object, and do not puncture it deeper into the stomach. We rolled up a triangular bandage and placed it near the object. And we used 1-2 rolls of bandages to secure the rolled triangular bandage before the ambulance arrived. We also learnt how to carry an unconscious person with 1 to 5 helpers. It was quite challenging as we needed some people to be physically strong.
After we got back to Indian file, Kaa give out the badges for the 2023 DJC challenge and proficiency badges. After that, we played a game about first aid and could get points. After the first aid, the P6 tried a challenge to win a limited-edition scarf. First, they had to complete the head bandage on their own, some people could do it but some failed. Second, they had to do the new first aid task which I shared earlier. Many of us failed and only 2 persons remained, Zeyu and Benjamin. Lastly, they had to say the 2 common ways of carrying an unconscious person.
Guess Who Won? Zeyu was the winner and awarded the limited-edition scarf. Everyone was cheering for Zeyu.
Soon, it was time again to go home.
After the sunset party, the senior sixers and sixers stayed for sixers council. During the sixers council, Ikki told us to use 3 words to describe this week activity. The common words were: Stressed, Excited and Tired.
Reflection: We did well as almost everyone in P6 knew the new first aid task, could do the head and arm bandage, managed to do it fast and could perform the action to carry an unconscious person. However, we need to improve as some of us did not know how to do the hand sling. We also need to have greater discipline as some sixers did not lead by example.
It is very critical to learn first aid so that we can properly treat wounds, save lives and provide best care while waiting for professional help (e.g. ambulance to come or the doctor’s treatment).
