Making Chinese Lanterns, 14th February 2015
Written by: Cheong Yew Meng, Assistant Sixer & Scribe
“Beep….Beep….horseshoe!’’
The three Senior Sixers shouted at the top of their voices. We
gathered and
formed up quickly with the assistance of the Sixers and Assistant Sixers.
After the
horseshoe, we gathered in indian file, took attendance and then Baloo asked us
whether we knew our new recruits well. Some did not. Some did. He then gave us
5 minutes to know the recruits better. After 5 minutes, we gathered back in
indian file. Baloo asked us who volunteered to say one of his/ her six members.
He tested every group and only Bliby passed!
“Go get your
materials and meet back here, go now,” the three Senior Sixers instructed us.
After getting our stuff, we split into six corner. All the Sixers knew how to
make 2 types of lanterns as Mdm Kerina has taught them. My Sixer, Luke taught two methods and I used the easier method to do my lantern. Mdm Kerina was very busy teaching us! During this period, some Cub Scouts did multiple lanterns after completing 1! Some mischievous ones kicked their lanterns as if they were footballs! This is an unacceptable behaviour. If the parent volunteer sees this, they will be in hot soup.
Soon, it was time to clean up the mess we made. After the clean up, Baloo praised the people about how different their lanterns were and scolded the six that used their lantern as a football. We ended this event by getting into horseshoe and finished sunset party!
It was a fun event. Thanks to Mdm Kerina, we learnt how to use red packets to make beautiful lanterns which could be used to decorate our homes and classrooms. From the lantern making session, we could also see the creativities of some of our fellow Cub Scouts.
