Today was the second scout meeting of
the year and the day the new recruits came in for their first session. During
the meeting, we learnt to tie knots like reef knot, square lashing and clove
hinge. After going through each of the knots in our respective sixes, Baloo
also tested us on the knots. Two cubs from each six would present to the rest
of the unit the three knots. Unfortunately, most were unsuccessful – which
means that they need more practice.
While the cubs were having fun with
knotting, the sixers were called to introduce themselves to the new recruits. The
recruits were then tested to see if they remembered our names. Next, the sixers
returned to their six while the senior sixers and a few seniors arranged a few
fun games to lay with the recruits. First, we played “Dog and Bone”, and then
we decided to let them have a go at playing “Pass the Hula-hoop”. The “Dog and
Bone” game taught the recruits to be alert at all times, while the hula-hop
game tested the recruits on their ability to coordinate and help one another.
Finally we played three awesome rounds of “Amoeba” which is a bit like
catching. I believe it was the best part of the meeting as the recruits seemed
to be having so much fun running here and there (the seniors
and senior sixers
too!).
