Sixers Training Camp 2011

Day 1
Saturday 02nd July 2011

By 0715 hrs, all Cubs nominated to attend our Sixers Training Camp were already gathered. After some administrative work, Akela assigned the 31 Cubs into 3 Sixes, Elephant, Giraffe and Hippo.

Senior Sixer: Kimberly Song
Asst. Senior Sixer: Jonathan Koong

Elephant Sixer: Eugene Lim
Asst. Sixer:: Mizra, Ethan Lim, Hoo Jinh Shenn
Giraffe Sixer: Jonathan Lam
Asst. Sixer: Aruna, Awyong Ming Min
Hippo Sixer: Jeremy Tan
Asst. Sixer: Brandon Khaw, Kylil, Ethan Lau

Arriving at Sembawang Terror Sea Scout Camp, Cubs were reminded that this was a Training Camp, and much would be demanded of them.

Eagle Scouts guided Cubs in setting up their tents, "home" for the next 2 nights. Baloo urged Cubs to ensure tents were properly set up, lest they collapsed during a rainy night!

Baloo briefed Cubs on the qualities of a Sixer. Using the acronym S I X E R:
S Skill
I  Instruction. To give clear instructions, and to also receive instructions
X Example. To lead by example
E Encourage.
R Responsible.

Baloo then showed Cubs how to tie a simplified Square Lashing, an important skill for many pioneering projects. Cubs had to build a simple shoe rack.

Lunch was beehoon with mushrooms, fishball and fishcake. Someone commented "beehoon never tasted so good!"

Cubs were taught how to lead songs. This involved engaging the audience and using voice and gestures to lead them.

Grey Wolf demonstrated fire lighting, and explained to Cubs that 3 important elements in lighting a fire were fuel, heat and oxygen. Cubs will be putting this skill to the test tomorrow when they cook their own dinner!

Louis and his team briefed Cubs on the safety precautions before embarking on a 10 km hike. This would qualify Cubs for one of the requirement of the Akela Award, a 10 km hike.

Cubs returned after about 3.5 hrs on the trail, stopping at the Sembawang Hot Springs to soothe tired feet. Everyone was in good spirits and shape, save for one 'casualty'. Ryan Ng had a mild sprain and had to be helped back to camp. After cleaning up, the camp 'singseh' got busy treating his sprain, and he was none the worse for it. He should be running tomorrow!

After dinner, it was post mortem time. Louis and Daniel provided feedback on the hike and the Cubs behaviour. There were valuable lessons to be learnt.
